The Title V program supports us to create opportunities for faculty and staff to develop innovative methods that foster student success in and out of the classroom. Special workshops and events are planned to enhance expertise on varied subjects.
In collaboration with College of the Desert, the Title V program sponsors teaching resources for faculty at both institutions. Each institution has created Faculty Development webpages to assist and enhance pedagogical needs. Be sure to visit the COD Title V Faculty Development website as well.

The Title V grant sponsors COD and CSUSB Palm Desert Campus faculty to attend and participate in conferences related to the grant's mission. Specifically, faculty are encouraged to recruit, retain and contribute to the success of target students attending these institutions.
Faculty are encouraged to submit funding requests for conferences. A list of conferences for teaching, learning communities, the use of technology in the classroom, and other instructionally related topics is provided by the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning.
Lilly Conferences are retreats that combine workshops, discussion sessions, and major addresses, with opportunities for informal discussion about excellence in college and university teaching and learning. Internationally-known scholars join new and experienced faculty members and administrators from all over the world to discuss topics such as gender differences in learning, incorporating technology into teaching, encouraging critical thinking, using teaching and student portfolios, implementing group learning, and evaluating teaching.

OBJECTIVES: Grants support public school teachers, public education support professionals, and/or faculty and staff in public institutions of higher education for one of the following two purposes: Grants to individuals fund participation in high-quality professional development experiences, such as summer institutes or action research; or Grants to groups fund collegial study, including study groups, action research, lesson study, or mentoring experiences for faculty or staff new to an assignment. All professional development must improve practice, curriculum, and student achievement. Decisions regarding the content of the professional growth activities must be based upon an assessment of student work undertaken with colleagues, and must be integrated into the institutional planning process. Recipients are expected to exercise professional leadership by sharing their new learning with their colleagues.
ELIGIBILITY: Applicants must be practicing U.S: public school teachers in grades PreK?12; public school education support professionals, or; faculty and staff at public higher education institutions. Preference will be given to members of the National Education Association. The sponsor encourages grant applications from teachers with less than seven years of experience in the profession and education support professionals.
FUNDING: The grant amount is $2,000 for individuals and $5,000 for groups engaged in collegial study; all $5,000 group grant applicants must include partner information. Grant funds may be used for fees, travel expenses, books, or other materials that enable applicants to learn subject matter, instructional approaches, and skills. Grants will fund activities for twelve months from the date of the award. (flb)
The March 2011 Issue of the Journal of Online Learning and Teaching is available online and contains 17 papers from authors around the globe. The contents of the most recent issue might be helpful for your own online teaching. The online journal can also be a vehicle for publishing your scholarly research on online education.
In September and December, 2010, incoming PDC students were given a survey to report on their media use. This PowerPoint reports the results. Faculty are encouraged to review the results in order to better understand their students.
